Description

This collection features two iconic examples of mid-century American calendar art, both complete and in very good overall condition. Included is a 1948 Esquire “Glamour Gallery” wall calendar featuring the quintessential “Varga Girl” aesthetic, complete with an insightful “Essay on Jiggling,” alongside a 1949 Varga calendar. The “Essay on Jiggling,” featured in the 1948 Esquire calendar, is a fascinating artifact of mid-century cultural commentary. Written by George A. McNamara, the essay is a tongue-in-cheek sociological observation of the “post-war American female” and the phenomenon of movement, grace, and vitality as viewed through the prism of the era’s pin-up culture. These pieces are quintessential examples of the pin-up art movement that dominated the era, showcasing the work of legendary artists associated with Esquire magazine in Chicago. The paper stock remains bright with minimal foxing and only minor handling marks consistent with age; notably, the original hanging holes appear undisturbed, suggesting these were likely never displayed or only used for a very short duration.
