Description

This fascinating ephemera lot offers a compelling glimpse into late 19th and early 20th-century American and British popular culture, showcasing diverse printing styles from lithography to classic letterpress typography. Included in the lot are four distinct paper artifacts: an 1872 copy of Gen. Tom Thumb’s 3 Years Tour Around the World by Sylvester Bleeker, printed by S. Booth in New York; a charming, string-bound Victorian-era “Sweet Home” Family Soap album featuring chromolithographic historical portraits such as Prince Otto von Bismarck, Ulysses S. Grant, and Robert E. Lee; a 1913 London-printed instructional brochure titled The Revival of Silhouette Portraiture by H.C. Mansfield featuring Baron Scotford; and a crisp, unopened 1915 promotional mailer envelope from Illustrated World magazine (formerly The Technical World) addressed to Peter Marshall in New Haven, Connecticut, postmarked from Chicago, Illinois. These pieces exhibit a fair to good collector’s condition overall, characterized by expected historical wear: the Tom Thumb booklet shows heavy spine deterioration, tape repairs, and edge chipping to its green paper covers, while the other booklets and envelope display mild toning, minor edge creases, and light surface smudging appropriate for their age. H 7.5″, W 4.5″, D 0.1″ (Tom Thumb); H 6.5″, W 8.75″, D 0.15″ (Sweet Home Album); H 7.5″, W 4.75″, D 0.05″ (Silhouette Brochure); H 3.75″, W 6.5″, D 0.05″ (Envelope). See photos.
