Lot 3525:
Description
This exceptionally scarce, 1895 limited-edition French volume titled Phonographie de l’Amour by “Gryperl” features delightful, whimsical Belle Époque illustrations by the renowned French artist, illustrator, and caricaturist Lucien Métivet, who was famous for his humorous contributions to Parisian journals and his masterfully designed posters. Published in Paris by Paul Ollendorff and printed by Chamerot et Renouard, the softcover book presents a beautifully illustrated, satirical commentary on late 19th-century romance, courtship, and societal manners, cleverly juxtaposed with early technological imagery like the phonograph shown on the cover wrapper. This piece is part of a strict deluxe printing of only 150 numbered copies, specifically from the run of 100 copies printed on fine papier vélin du Marais featuring the text in black and the vignettes in a muted grey tone. The antique paper volume displays minor corner chipping, edge wear, and small tears to its original paper covers, with typical interior toning, faint foxing, a minor spot of moisture staining near the upper spine binding, and minor spine stress consistent with a fragile softcover of this era, though it remains well-protected by an external glassine wrapper. H 8″, W 5.75″, D 0.25″. Please see photos for condition. From the Allan Koenigsberg collection.
