Lot 3524:
Description
This scarce, original 1893 Gilded Age theatrical souvenir program celebrates the historic 200th performance of the musical comedy extravaganza “1492” up to date, produced by Edward E. Rice’s famous “Rice’s Surprise Party” at the Columbia Theatre on February 15th, 1893. Published by the White-Smith Music Publishing Co. with offices in Boston, New York, and Chicago, this ephemeral piece features a libretto by R.A. Barnet and music by Carl Pflueger. As an incredible snapshot of late-19th-century American theater history, the program includes a detailed cast list, notable production staff, a performance record tracking its sensational multi-theater runs across Boston, and a prominent period advertisement on the reverse for Weber Pianos out of their 5th Avenue warerooms in New York. This piece remains in fair to good antique condition, showing age-appropriate toning, minor edge wear, and faint creasing; as noted, the rear cover is detached but present and otherwise well-preserved. H 11.25″, W 8.25″, D 0.1″. See photos. From the Allan Koenigsberg collection.
