Description

An exceptional and scarce piece of early sound recording ephemera, this original late 1890s to early 1900s paper instruction card features detailed, illustrated “Directions for Operating the Phonograph.” From an expert talking machine collector’s pspective, this is a highly desirable historical document detailing the precise mechanics of an early cylinder phonograph—including instructions for cylinder placement, reproducing, recording, and even “shaving the cylinder for another record.” Technical illustrations and font style strongly point to production by the Edison Phonograph Works or a contemporary distributor from that era. Objectively, the piece displays age-appropriate toning, light edge wear, a small notch at the top border, and a handwritten pencil inventory notation (“XE 5491″) on the upper right corner of the reverse side. H 7″, W 11″, D 0”. Please see photos for condition. From the Allan Koenigsberg collection.
