Description
This original May–June 1878 issue of The North American Review (No. 262), published by D. Appleton and Company in New York, represents a monumental moment in American history, capturing the nation’s intellectual discourse during the Reconstruction era. Edited by Allen Thorndike Rice, this softcover periodical contains crucial essays from Ralph Waldo Emerson and General James A. Garfield, but its true crowning jewel is Chapter IX: “The Phonograph and its Future” by Thomas A. Edison, penned justonths after his world-changing invention. Visually, the piece reflects the classic, utilitarian aesthetic of late 19th-century periodical publishing, rendered on delicate paper stock. Objectively assessing its condition, the item is complete with thecover still attached, but it is in very fragile condition, exhibiting significant chipping, paper loss, and tearing along the spine and outer edges of the paper covers, alongside expected paper toning, minor staining, and age-related wear.
