Description

The Lioret Le Merveilleux (The Marvelous) was a groundbreaking, spring wound French cylinder phonograph created around 1895 by Parisian clockmaker Henri Lioret. It was historically significant for utilizing durable celluloid cylinders—anticipating Edison’s celluloid cylinders by nearly 15 years. Originally designed as an “amusing and scientific toy”, it featured an ingenious, quiet clockwork motor and a hidden sound reproducer inside a simple cardboard box. This example is complete but needs restoration. The motor winds and runs. The cardboard case is all there but is missing half the hinge on the bottom door and needs rebuilding. It comes with 2 original records in partial boxes. Measures 4” wide, 4.5” deep, 7.5” tall. From the Allen Koenigsberg collection.
