The Frank Rider Collection - Spring Classic Part 1 - Day 2
Lot 1400:
Description
This impressive, heavy-duty cast metal lion head is a striking artifact reminiscent of the golden age of traveling circuses. While you mentioned a potential mid-century origin, the style, material, and construction—specifically the heavy-duty, sand-cast nature of the piece—are highly characteristic of decorative metalwork produced for circus parade wagons or show-front ornamentation in the late 19th to very early 20th century. The piece features a high-relief, stylized depiction of a lion with a thick, flowing mane. The reverse side shows evidence of its industrial origin, featuring a central mounting boss and a rough, unfinished casting texture indicative of a utilitarian architectural element. The object is in good vintage condition, exhibiting minor surface oxidation, small casting imperfections, and localized wear consistent with its age, all of which enhance its authentic, weathered aesthetic. H 10.5″, W 9.25″, D 3.5″. See photos for condition.
