Original whooping cough paper sign issued by the Public Health service of Labette County (Kansas). These were placed in homes to warn visitors to keep away. In the early 20th century, whooping cough (pertussis) was a leading cause of childhood mortality in the U.S., with over 200,000 cases and up to 9,000 deaths annually. The disease primarily affected children under five. Widespread adoption of the DTP vaccine in the 1940s caused cases to plummet by over 90% by the 1970s, It has been matted and framed under glass with a contemporary frame. Paper shows signs of water stains. Sign measures 11″ X 14″, frame measures 16″ wide, 13.5″ tall.
