Franz Oehrlein (1932–2013) was a master craftsman from Mainz, Germany, celebrated for his rare and high-quality mechanical musical instruments, including street organs and barrel organs. His work is often characterized by intricate inlaid wooden cases and the inclusion of charming automata, such as moving musicians and directors that appear to lead the music.
His organs are known for their rich, loud sound and versatile musicality. His instruments were produced in very small numbers. For certain types, as few as six examples were ever made, making them highly sought after by collectors. Oehrlein’s work is historically significant enough to be featured in exhibitions, such as at the Museum for Music Automatons in Seewen Switzerland. See video at https://youtu.be/cAlxIS3Toog
