Description
This masterfully executed high-relief carving features a dynamic, five-clawed Imperial dragon winding through a dense field of stylized “ruyi” clouds. While the deep verdigris-style patina in the recessed areas mimics aged bronze, the substrate is likely a dense, high-quality wood carved with exceptional detail—from the individual scales of the serpentine body to the flared nostrils and flowing whiskers of the dragon’s head. The scalloped, cloud-form border suggests this was an architectural medallion, possibly originating from a grand screen or temple interior in the late 19th to early 20th century. The piece is in good antique condition, showing age-appropriate thinning of the gold leaf on high-contact points and a rich, dusty oxidation within the carvings that enhances its dimensional depth.
