Description
Classic, full-bodied bear skin rug. This style, popular from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century, presents a dramatic display piece, often found in hunting lodges or rustic dens. The deep brown, multi-tonal fur suggests it may be a North American Black Bear (Ursus americanus) or possibly a smaller brown bear species, likely taken legally as a trophy. The pelt has been professionally tanned, backed with thick, vibrant red felt, and mounted on a rigid plywood or fiberboard backing to ensure it lies flat and maintains its shape—a sign of a quality taxidermy job. The felt border is finished with a decorative sawtooth or zig-zag edge, a common detail on these traditional rugs . The item appears to be in Very Good condition; the fur is dense and mostly intact, with good color saturation. There are no major signs of moth damage or significant shedding. The red felt backing is bright, and the rigid substrate appears solid. There are no visible manufacturer’s markings or evidence of a taxidermist’s tag.
