Description

This is a fantastic piece of mining history, a small, yet heavy-duty ore cart or mine skip, originating from the historic lead mines of Galena, Illinois. This provenance ties this directly to the Upper Mississippi Valley Zinc-Lead District. Likely dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, the rustic aesthetic and rugged construction are exactly what you’d expect from a piece of equipment built for the demanding environment of a mine. The hopper is constructed from thick, rough-hewn wooden planks, reinforced with heavy iron straps that are riveted in place, showcasing the utilitarian design meant for the brutal subterranean environment. The undercarriage is built from similarly substantial wooden beams, mounted atop four solid, flanged cast iron wheels designed to run on narrow gauge mine rails used to haul lead ore, rock, or waste. The overall condition is consistent with genuine age and heavy use, featuring significant weathering, wood erosion, and a beautiful, deep, oxidized rust patina on all metal components. The wood shows various chips, splits, and a dark, stained appearance, adding to its character. The wheels and axle components appear functional but exhibit substantial surface rust. Based on the measurements provided in the prompt, the estimated dimensions are: H 21″, W 23″, D 37″. Hopper measures: 12”x 14”x27”. From the Western display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
