Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1467c:
Description
What a fantastic example of a Great Wheel or Wool Wheel spinning machine, likely dating from the mid-19th century, an era when these large wheels were still prevalent for spinning wool fiber before the widespread use of smaller, foot-treadle models. This appears to be crafted from a combination of woods, possibly oak for the main base and lighter turned wood, like maple or birch, for the wheel and supports. The form is classic, with a substantial, multi-spoked 19.5″ diameter drive wheel and beautifully turned supports. The mechanics for the flyer and bobbin assembly are present, although the driving band is currently missing. The piece has a lovely, aged patina with a clear finish, showing its age gracefully. Condition is consistent with an antique of this type, showing surface wear, minor scratches, and some small wood splitting on the base, notably near the joints, which is expected for its age. The wheel and flyer assembly appear intact, though functionality cannot be guaranteed without testing. Overall, a solid piece of textile history. H 49″, W 30″, D 23″ Note: Pickup/Transport required.
