Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1465b:
Description
This is an excellent example of a genuine vintage explosives crate, likely dating from the early to mid-20th century given the style and the ICC (Interstate Commerce Commission) marking, which was standard for regulating the transport of hazardous materials. The crate is constructed from rough-sawn wood planks, held together with common wire nails, indicative of its original utilitarian purpose for shipping high explosives. The side of the box boldly features the branding “GOLD MEDAL EXPLOSIVES” and the manufacturer, “ILLINOIS POWDER MFG. CO.” of ST. LOUIS, MO . One end is marked “50 LBS GOLD MEDAL GELATIN 40% 1 1/8 X 8”, indicating it originally held fifty pounds of 40% strength gelatin dynamite sticks measuring $1frac{1}{8}$ inches by 8 inches. The wood is a medium-light tone and shows significant authentic patina from age and use, including dark staining, nicks, splits, and wear along the edges. The stenciled red and black lettering remains bold and largely intact, though faded and lightly chipped in areas. The overall condition is solid and rustic, typical of an item used in mining or construction before being repurposed.
