Description

This fantastic collection of early 20th-century Americana is centered around a classic two-tone stoneware syrup or dispenser jar produced by the Western Stoneware Company of Monmouth, Illinois, post-1906. As a result of the 1906 merger that formed the company, the stoneware exhibits the highly desirable salt-glazed, naturalistic gray-tan body on the bottom half, contrasted with the dark brown Albany slip glaze on the shoulder and lid. This combination is characteristic of their utilitarian wares produced at Plant 1 (formerly Monmouth Pottery). The presence of the original brown-glazed lid with its embossed rim detailing and the iron bail handle makes this a sought-after, complete example for collectors of Midwestern pottery. Accompanying this piece is a folk art-style wooden bucket, painted in a faded, pale blue-green milk paint, complete with a lid and fixed metal carrying handle, and a smaller, iron-banded wooden barrel or keg. The stoneware jar is in excellent, well-preserved condition with its glazes intact and no visible structural damage. The wooden pieces show the honest wear and deep patina expected of rural functional objects, including significant paint loss, natural shrinkage, and weathering, all of which enhance their decorative appeal as genuine period pieces.
