Lot 1434:
Description
This 19th or early 20th century cast iron ball and chain with a single shackle represents a significant piece of history. These types of heavy restraint implements were used for various forms of incarceration and labor, particularly in correctional facilities or work camps. The piece features a substantial, textured cast iron ball attached to a forged chain, which terminates in a simple, heavy iron shackle designed to fit around an ankle, secured by a riveted pin or bolt. The overall condition is good for an item of this age and purpose, displaying a deep, rich brown and black patina from heavy use and exposure, with surface rust and pitting visible across the ball, chain links, and shackle. Ball: Dia. 5” / Chain: L43”H 6″ / Shackle: H 4.75″, W 4”.
