Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1409:
Description
A beautiful example of a late 19th-century oval portrait frame, likely made of gesso over wood with a dark Ebonized finish. The style is typical of the Victorian era, featuring elaborate, applied relief ornamentation at the top and sides, which often incorporated floral or foliate motifs. The framed image is a popular print titled “Lincoln and Family,” a composite photograph created after Abraham Lincoln’s death, depicting him, Mary Todd Lincoln, and two of their sons, Robert Todd Lincoln (in military uniform) and Tad Lincoln, reading. This image was widely reproduced in the late 1860s and 1870s. The frame’s reverse shows a wooden backing board with the picture door held close by nails. A manufacturers stamp is noticeable at the bottom of the frame backing. The frame is structurally sound. Please use photos to judge condition and bid accordingly. Frame: H 14″, W 12”. From Donley’s Wild West Town Museum.
