Description

These are a magnificent pair of First Nations or Métis gauntlet gloves (mittens), likely dating from the early to mid-20th century, perhaps crafted for the tourist or fur trade market. The body is made from a rich, light brown suede or tanned hide, possibly deerskin or similar, and features exquisite floral embroidery and appliqué on the back of the hand. The designs typically represent local flora and are executed using colored threads (some may be silk) in various colors, including blues, purples, yellows, and black, against a tan ground. The cuff is trimmed in dark blue/black fabric and a red cotton lining with a small, repeating geometric pattern, adding to the period authenticity and warmth. The overall style points to regions known for this type of vibrant Aboriginal craftsmanship, such as the Great Lakes or Canadian Subarctic. The condition is Very Good for an item of this age; the suede shows some minor soiling and general wear consistent with use and age, particularly to the light-colored cuff section and around the fingers. The threadwork appears largely intact with no obvious major losses, and the interior lining is worn but present. H 12″, W 4.65″.
