Description

This is a highly desirable limited edition print titled ‘A Winter Surprise’ by renowned Western and space artist Paul Calle (American, 1928-2010), dated 1983. Calle is known for his detailed, compelling historical and contemporary illustrations, often featuring fur traders, mountain men, and NASA subjects (he was the only artist present for the Apollo 11 crew’s final preparation and designed the iconic “First Man on the Moon” stamp). This print captures a rugged frontiersman, possibly a fur trapper or mountain man, clad in a striking red wool coat and fur leggings, standing over a downed bird of prey—likely an eagle or hawk—in a deeply snowy, evergreen landscape, holding a long rifle. The image powerfully evokes the harsh realities of the North American wilderness. The piece is hand-signed by the artist, Paul Calle, and numbered 612/950, indicating it is the 612th print out of a total limited edition of 950, which is confirmed by the accompanying Certificate of Authenticity from The American Artist Collection. The artwork was featured on the cover of the November 1983 issue of American Artist magazine, a copy of which is included with the lot, adding significant provenance. The framing appears to be a complementary dark wood, with a double mat. The print itself appears to be in excellent, crisp condition with no visible foxing or damage, and the matting is clean. The frame shows minor, expected scuffing consistent with age and handling but is structurally sound. The overall presentation is strong and ready for display.
