Description
Sharps New Model 1863 Carbine. One of the iconic firearms of the American Civil War, renowned for its falling-block, breech-loading action, it made it a favorite of Union cavalry troopers. This particular rifle was produced by Robbins & Lawrence in Windsor Vermont. The carbine is marked with the patent date “C. SHARPS’ PAT / SEPT 12th 1848” on the left side of the breech. The right tang bears the markings, “C. SHARPS’ PAT / OCT 5th 1852” and “R.S. LAWRENCE PAT / APRIL 12th 1859”. The upper tang is inscribed with the serial number “C, 18065”. The rifle features a 22 ¼ -inch round, .50-70 caliber rifled barrel. The two-piece, walnut stock shows wear, nicks, and chips from use and storage, but overall solid with no cracks. The overall gun is 39 inches in length. The bore is clean and the rifling is good with prominent grooves. The metal exhibits remnants of its original factory finish with pitting and oxidation.
