Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1310c:
Description
This is an extraordinary piece of Western Americana: an original Malheur Stage Company Way-Bill No. 7, dated May 15, 1891, documenting freight transport between Baker City and Malheur County in Eastern Oregon. As a seasoned collector of frontier paper ephemera, finding a complete, original stagecoach document of this age is truly a coup. The way-bill identifies BASCHE & CO. & McEwen, Proprs., and details the shipment of a total of two packages of Stage Freight (No. 1 & 2), addressed To W. W. Black and J. M. W., with a total revenue of just 75 Cents. The item is a single, large sheet of thin paper, originally folded into six sections for use and storage, and is accompanied by a modern interpretive placard. Condition is remarkably good for its age; the paper is toned/discolored to a deep cream/tannish hue, consistent with 130+ years of age. There are clear, defined fold lines (creases) where the document was folded, but no apparent major tears, rips, or significant holes. The handwritten ink entries and printed text are clear and legible. The placard is crisp and modern. H 20″, W 14″ (Unfolded). H 10″, W 5″ (Folded). From the Western display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
