Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1310a:
Description
This is a rare piece of railroad and express agency history, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. This type of strongbox was a staple in the transportation of valuables, cash, and sensitive documents before the widespread use of armored trucks and modern banking security. Constructed of incredibly heavy cast iron with reinforced straps, a hinged top with a latch, and large pull-ring handles, its primary function was security and durability on the rails and stagecoaches. The box features stenciling in faded yellow paint that reads, “RAILWAY EXPRESS AGENCY”. The overall condition is good and is consistent with decades of heavy use in a railway/stagecoach environment. The iron has a deep, dark brown to black patina with surface oxidation and loss of paint, which adds to its authentic, untouched look. The hinges and latch are present and move freely, the lock mechanism is functional (needs oils), and the key is present. Given the material and construction, this piece is extremely heavy, weighing over 100 lbs.
H 16.25″, W 27.5″, D 17″.
