Description

This is a robust and classic example of an American Arts and Crafts-style storage chest or blanket chest, likely dating to the early 20th century, circa 1900-1920. The construction appears to be solid quarter-sawn oak, a favored material of the period, finished in a dark, rich stain typical of the Mission or Craftsman aesthetic. Its simple, rectilinear form is accented by the distinctive, exposed brass or bronze metal strap hinges and the heavy, oval-shaped drop-bail side handles, which contribute to a hammered-metal appearance. The front panel is constructed in the traditional plank-and-stile manner, showcasing the beautiful, distinctive grain of the quarter-sawn oak. The interior shot confirms a simple, deep storage cavity. The overall condition is consistent with age and use as a functional piece of furniture; the wood shows surface scratches, minor dings, and a patina to the dark finish, particularly on the top surface. The metal hardware shows tarnish and wear but appears fully intact. The interior is clean but has a visible dark stain/finish wear on the bottom panel. It rolls on four ball casters.
