Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1250:
Description
This is an exceptional example of a Quarter-Sawn Oak Curio or Display Cabinet, firmly rooted in the American Arts and Crafts or Mission style, circa 1900-1920. The robust, rectilinear form, combined with the distinctive grain of the quarter-sawn oak, speaks directly to the movement’s emphasis on natural materials and honest construction. The cabinet features two glass-paned doors with original iron or patinated brass hardware, including decorative escutcheons and ring pulls. The lower door panels are beautifully joined with a visible, exposed dovetail or butterfly key detail, an exemplary Arts and Crafts joint. Inside, the case is divided vertically and contains three fixed wooden shelves, offering four levels of display space. The sides also feature large panes of glass, maximizing visibility. The back and shelves show a rich, dark patina, likely original finish, contrasting with the lighter, sun-kissed tone on the doors and sides. Condition is consistent with age and use; there are scuffs and minor surface wear to the finish, particularly on the top and base, and some expected scratching on the interior shelves. The overall structure is sound, and the glass appears intact with no visible cracks. H 60″, W 46″, D 16.5″
