Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1216:
Description
Grouping features a traditional-style, hand-woven textile pouch and a single, long-strand seed necklace from the Southwestern United States, likely Navajo or a similar regional style, based on the geometric ‘stepped’ zigzag pattern and color palette. The pouch is executed in a tight tapestry weave using wool yarns in a striking combination of red, black, and gray. The design features a bold, central double-X motif over the zigzag background, framed by a generous fringe along the edges, lending it a rustic, time-honored appearance. Paired with the pouch is a single, extra-long strand of natural beads featuring dried corn kernels (a significant material in many Native American cultures) alternating with larger, brown, variegated natural seeds or nuts. This combination gives the necklace a substantial, organic, and culturally important feel. The pouch shows considerable wear consistent with age and use; there is fraying and loss to the wool fringe, and the bottom edges of the textile are somewhat ragged, though the main body of the weave remains structurally sound. The necklace appears to be in good, wearable condition with natural variations in the organic materials. H 10″, W 9″ (pouch with fringe); L 25″ (necklace, doubled). From the Native American display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
