Description
Navajo sand painting created in the mid to late 20th century. Depicts 2 figures- Mother Earth and Father Sky. The painting is square and features a tan background with two stylized figures facing outwards with their arms raised. Traditionally known as iikaah, sand paintings were created for healing ceremonies and destroyed after use. In the mid-20th century they began to be made as permanent artworks and sold. This particular piece is done on a wood underlayment with note cards on the back are taped with descriptions of Father Sky and Mother Earth. This painting was done in Sheep Springs, New Mexico. It is in excellent condition. Wire on back for hanging. Dimensions: 12”x12” x.25”. See photos.
