19th century Skokomish Berry basket sold at Hudson Bay Fur Company Inc. Seattle WA. It features a dark woven design with narrow vertical bands of imbrication that intersect with three wider horizontal zigzag bands. There are leather loops and cords below the rim primarily on one side. The affixed tag reads “carrying basket Skokomish Indians cedar, square grass-‘Mt. Peaks and arrow heads” mount Skokomish is a 6430 foot mountain summit located in the Olympic mountains of Washington state. It is visible on the Olympic skyline from as far away as Seattle. Mount Skokomish has three summits, with the southern peak being the highest. Like the Skokomish River, the mountains toponym honors the Skokomish people. The basket’s age and dark coloration are notable characteristics and represents a piece of Puget Sound Native American craftsmanship that is highly sought after.
