Lot 1147:
Description
This oval coiled grass basket dates from the mid-20th century. It is constructed upwards from a central knot at the base. The coils are sewn together with grass thread and the exterior is decorated with geometric patterns of red and green, with checkered bands of green separating trapezoidal blocks of red. These patterns are created using a dyed leather inserted into the weave. The basket becomes wider in the center and tapers at the top with a fitted lid. These baskets were traditionally used for storage gathering and/or serving food. The term Eskimo is a general term used to describe the people of this region. Based on the style material and weaving technique the basket is likely many by the Yupik people of western Alaska. Dimensions: 12.5” long x 8.5” wide x 11” tall w/lid. Overall in good condition. Please see photos.
