Lot 1139:
Description
Coiled basket made by the Maidu people of Northern California circa early 1900’s. Their baskets are known for intricate designs and fine craftsmanship, using sedge root, red bud, and willow. This basket was crafted using a single willow rod technique, likely served a utilitarian purpose with evidence of residue on the interior, and a burnishing on the exterior base rim. There are some spots where the weaving has been lost from handling. The exterior features a trio of zigzag lines traveling from the rim to the base with a set of rays at a sharper angle down. Dimensions 13” diameter at rim with 6.5” base diameter. Total height is 7”.
