Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1131:
Description
This is an excellent collection of six prehistoric lithic projectile points, showing a nice diversity in form, material, and patination—a testament to the skill of early North American peoples. Based on the shapes, particularly the prominent corner-notching on several examples, we are likely looking at a range of styles potentially spanning the Middle to Late Archaic and Woodland periods. The materials appear to be various types of chert or flint, ranging in color from light tan/buff to rich brown and even a dark, almost black hue in the center point. Several points exhibit distinct basal grinding and fine pressure flaking. Two points have visible, hand-written catalogue markings in black ink, such as “15 / 8M93” and “8M 83″, which are valuable for tracing their provenance within a collection. Condition is generally good for excavated artifacts of this age, though they display the expected minor field wear, resharpening evidence, and chips consistent with both prehistoric use and recovery; there is no evidence of modern damage. H 2.25″, W 1.5” (approx. largest point). From the Native American display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
