Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1117:
Description
This exceptionally woven coiled basket, likely by a master weaver of the Yokuts people from the San Joaquin valley or Sierra Nevada foothills region of central California circa 1930. The bowl-form basket showcases distinctive artistry and technical skill for which Yokuts basketry is highly celebrated. The basket is constructed using a tight bundled coil technique, with the foundation of grasses, and tightly wrapped natural and dyed plant materials. The natural ground color, likely derived from sedge root or willow, provide a warm earthy base. The surface is adorned with striking geometric designs of deep black (bracken fern root or devil’s claw). The primary decorative band features a repeating pattern of stacked triangular motifs, with larger hourglass figures opposed to each other on the sides of the bowl. The rim of the basket is meticulously finished, with the final row of tightly stitched toils and exhibits minimal weave loss, commensurate with age and use. Dimensions: 16” diameter, 4.5” tall, 8” diameter base. Please see photos.
