Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1089:
Description
This is a superb example of a North American hand-carved horn implement, crafted from a dense, dark material, most likely buffalo or bovine horn. Its distinct, crescent-like form, featuring a deep, scooped bowl on one end that tapers to a pointed, slightly curved handle, is characteristic of a powder horn scoop or a small, utilitarian serving ladle. The style is typical of American folk art or items crafted for personal use throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly on the frontier where materials like horn were readily available and durable. It exhibits a deep, near-black coloration with subtle grain or texture. Condition is very good overall, noting expected minor surface wear, including light scratches and small nicks along the inner rim and convex surfaces. Visible residue on the outer, convex surface of the scoop’s bowl, possibly mineral residue from its final storage environment. H 1.75″, W 7.25″, D 1.75″. From the Native American display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
