Description
This 1820s cast iron tomahawk features a robust hand forged head with prominent cutting edge and rear spike. The hardwood handle stained a deep reddish brown is likely a replacement. Axe head pinned to handle with square nail. Spike Tomahawks like this one were used as weapons and tools for skinning game, cutting bark and puncturing leather. They predate the pipe Tomahawks and were introduced in the early 18th century and traded up to the Indian wars of the 1880s. Condition good. Dimensions: 22.5” long. Axe head 10.5” length, 4.75” blade height. See photos.
