Description
This is a Blackfeet Indian painted war shield, circa 1920s. The shield is constructed from brain-tanned leather stretched over a hoop measuring 21” in diameter. It features original paint depicting horizontal red stripes on the right half and central design of stylized animal on the left. A small medicine pouch attached to the center. Feather drops suspended from the bottom edge and trade cloth drop attached to the side. Such shields held practical and spiritual significance used for protection in battle and as a canvas for personal and tribal symbolism. The Blackfeet were known as fierce warriors and their shields were important expressions of their identity and beliefs. Dimensions overall: 35” x23” x2”. Please see photos.
