Description

This is a superlative example of historic Acoma Pueblo pottery, dated circa 1925-1926. The classic globular jar or bowl form is adorned with exceptional polychrome decoration, a hallmark of Acoma work, featuring a white/cream slip, black mineral paint, and a distinctive reddish-orange or rust color. The complex design schema utilizes signature Acoma motifs: intricate hatching (cross-hatching) near the rim and neck, bold, whirling spirals (suggesting wind or water elements), and highly stylized avian or insect designs, such as the prominent butterfly-like element. The artistic precision and balance in the painting are indicative of a master potter from this era. The piece is in overall good, vintage condition, consistent with nearly a century of age and possible use, showing expected surface wear, minor pigment loss, scuffs, and abrasions, particularly around the rim and where the black paint is applied over the slip. The un-slipped, terracotta-colored clay base and the evident hand-coiling further authenticate this piece as genuine Acoma production. H 5″, W 7″, D 7″ Please see photos.
