Description

This is a Santo Domingo Pueblo pot, circa 1920s. Buff colored clay with a clean cream slip and black and red floral designs. The clay’s elasticity allows for larger forms such as this one. Depicted on opposite sides, are the typical Santo Domingo flowers. Pottery from this Pueblo are known for simple, bold designs that have remained consistent since the 1700s. Condition is good, with the only detriment is a chip on the pot rim 1.5” long x .5” wide. Sticker label on bottom reads (some undecipherable): “Santa Domingo…FldcFlN/(Harlow P53v) c.1890/c.1920” This is likely a reference to the 1973 publication: Matte-paint pottery of the Tewa, Keres and Zuni Pueblos. by Los Alamos Theoretical Nuclear physicist and Pottery expert Francis H. Harlow. Further research needed. Dimensions: 8” wide at waist, 6” rim diameter, 10” tall and 4” base diameter.
