Description
This Hopi pottery bowl crafted by Ruth Paymella and signed on the bottom circa 1970s, is a notable example of Hopi pottery traditions. The bowl is made from the reddish firing “sikyatska” clay typical of Hopi pottery and features a design painted in black with elements characteristic of this “sikyatska” revival style showcasing organized and crisply drawn patterns complementing the bowl shape. These patterns may include traditional Pueblo plant and moisture symbols. The bowl is in good overall condition with some small touched up spots. At the base is a label that reads “Hopi”. Dimensions: 7” at widest, rim diameter 4.5”, 4.75” tall. Base diameter 2”. Please see photos. Ruth Paymella (Born circa 1920 – 1980’s) was a member of the Parrot Clan and was known for her redware bowls and plates. Her favorite designs are prayer sticks, clouds, parrots, parrot tail feathers and germination symbols.She is mentioned in Gregory Schaaf’s book Hopi-Tewa Pottery 500 Artists Biographies.
