Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1040:
Description
A charming, mid-20th-century Native American-style doll, exhibiting characteristics very similar to the popular “Skookum” doll line, which were often called “Bully Good” dolls. The doll depicts a mother carrying a baby (or papoose) on her back – a classic motif. The face is likely made of painted clay or a composition material, exhibiting pronounced features and blush, giving it a characteristic folk-art look. She wears a traditional-style ensemble consisting of a colorful floral-print skirt, an undershirt, and a heavy, draped blanket-like coat in red-and-green plaid felted wool. Details include black yarn hair styled in braids with pink accents, a faux-fur headband, seed bead earrings, and a large shell or seed bead necklace. The doll is standing on simple wrapped feet with painted detail. Overall condition is good vintage, showing expected age-appropriate wear and some minor fabric pilling on the wool coat and light fading to the textiles. There is a visible hang tag attached to a box behind the doll, which should be disregarded as it is a common scale reference. H 14″, W 5″, D 3′. From the Native American display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
