Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1039:
Description
This intriguing piece appears to be a contemporary or vintage interpretation of a Native American style hair roach drop or dance ornament, sometimes also called a scalplock drop. These items are often attached to a dance roach or worn as an accessory, featuring a long braid of hair, traditionally horse or human, adorned with various materials. The piece is constructed around a small, wrapped organic hoop, from which dark, braided hair (likely horse or human) extends down. It is further embellished with a cluster of beads and bone or pipe-like hairpipe segments attached to the hoop, including pieces colored white, red, and blue, as well as a small, conical metal jingle or cone tassel. The long braid terminates with a tuft of hair and some small feathers secured with a simple wrapping. The aesthetic suggests a mid to late 20th-century souvenir or modern regalia item. The condition is generally fair, showing expected signs of age and handling, including loose fibers, wear on the braiding, some minor losses to the wrapping materials on the hoop, and some surface patina on the metal cone. Based on the provided user text, the total length is approximately: H 16″, W 3″, D 0.5″. From the Native American display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
