Description
Salish burden basket circa 1920s. These baskets are traditionally crafted by the Salish people of the Pacific Northwest known for their sturdy construction and intricate weaving patterns. Burden baskets were historically used for carrying various items such as food, firewood and other material. This basket is rectangular in shape with handles for carrying. The handles are adorned with wrapped leather strips with read glass bead edging. The handles are affixed to the basket body with leather thongs inserted through the basket wall. The designs woven into the basket are characteristic of Salish weaving traditions often incorporating geometric patterns and symbolic motifs. In this case, there are two columns on the short ends and three columns on the sides of a repetitive design. The basket is well used and has handling damage along the upper rows of the rim. This basket has seen a fair amount of personal use. Dimensions: 17” long x 11” wide x 6.75” basket body tall x 14” with handles extended. Please see photos.
