Description

This circa 1890s Mingqaaq basket is a type made by the Inuit people of the Arctic and subarctic regions for tourist trade. These baskets are made using a tight coiling technique which makes them strong and durable. While the Inuit have made baskets for generations Mingqaaq baskets like the one shown, are not traditional and originated from the Yupik peoples. This basket design incorporates red interwoven yarn for vibrant decoration. Although still present, a significant portion the red yard has come off. Although crafted for the tourist trade, it still showcases the excellent weaving skills of the Yupik peoples. Slightly misshapen at its base. Some fraying of the weave on the lid rim and basket rim as well. Dimensions: 11.5” x 8.5” x 8” tall w/lid. Base dimensions 9” x7” as it sits. Please see photos.
