Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1021:
Description
Pima Olla crafted circa the 1940s showcases the artistry and skill of Native American basket weaving. The olla features a bulbous body that tapers to a slightly flared rim constructed using a coiled weaving technique with natural fibers, possibly willow or sumac. The surface design is a striking geometric pattern in dark brown or black contrasting against the lighter tan of the natural fiber. This design likely achieved with devil’s claw consists of repeating zigzag or lightning bolt motif, which is a common element in Pima and Apache basketry. The rim is simple and clean typical of Pima baskets. This piece would have been functional, used for storing water or dry goods. There is some loss to the weave at the base of the piece but overall the condition is good and stable. Dimensions: 10.5” tall x 10” at widest point x 7.5” rim diameter and 6.5” base diameter.
