Description
This basket circa 1930s from Southern California was possibly made by Chumash or neighboring tribes such as Gabrielino, Tongva or Yokuts. Baskets from this region are known for their intricate design coil construction using materials like juncus, deer grass, sumac and yucca. This particular shape is common for mission baskets which were often used for food preparation and storage. The black geometric pattern on this particular piece as well as the herring bone weaving pattern on the rim are typical of the Chumash or other Southern California basketry styles the black color comes from dyed juncus. Dimensions: 18” rim diameter, 7” tall and base diameter of 6.5”. A striking piece for its size and bold design. Please see photos.
