Description
This circa 1890s southwestern burden basket likely Apache showcases the resourcefulness and artistry of Native American craftsmanship. It is a conical shape tapering at the bottom typical of burden baskets designed for carrying heavy loads the basket is constructed using a tight coil weave technique utilizing natural fibers such as Yucca or Willow common in the southwest the exterior has a warm even tone with subtle variations in color and texture that speak to its age and use. Some areas exhibit where and minor stitch loss particularly at the base attesting to its history as a functional object. A notable feature is remnants of a buckskin carrying strap which would have been used to secure the basket to the wearer’s head her shoulders. The rim is reinforced with heavier stitching. This is not only a practical artifact but a tangible piece of cultural heritage reflecting the traditions of the people who created and used it.
