Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1010:
Description
An excellent grouping of three contemporary Hopi Kachina dolls (or Katsina dolls), each hand-carved, painted, and decorated with natural materials such as fur, feathers, and leather/suede accents. The figures are mounted on round, natural-cut wooden bases. The underside of each base is marked, identifying the figures from left to right as “Buffalo,” “Hototo Kachina,” and “HILILI KACHINA” (or possibly HILIUT YACHINA/KACHINA, the script is slightly ambiguous, but HILILI is more common). Each base is also signed “L. Ramoos” (or similar, possibly L. Ramos), indicating they were created by the same artist. These are detailed and vibrant examples of this significant Native American art form, representing the spiritual beings of the Hopi people. Overall, the condition appears Very Good; the dolls show minor shelf wear and slight movement or shedding of the natural fiber decorations, consistent with age and display, but no major chips, cracks, or paint loss are visible. H 13″, W 5″, D 5″. From the Native American display in Donley’s Wild West Town.
