Description
This is a painted Plains Indian parfleche container, date unknown made . Parfleche bags are traditionally made by Plains Indian tribes from rawhide and decorated with geometric designs. The term parfleche comes from the French fur traders who use it to describe raw hide items. Used to store items of various types, this bag is constructed of a horizontal nature with a wide flap across the top. It is flanked by fringe and the piece is edged with strips of red and green textile, that are beaded. The center of the bag has painted areas of green, red, and yellow, trimmed in blue paint. Undecorated on back. Overall in good, stable condition. Dimensions: 17” wide x 8” tall x 3.5” deep. Measurements accommodate fringes. See photos.
