Description
This impressive and charming bronze fountain sculpture, likely cast in the late 20th century in a traditional, naturalistic style, captures a delightful scene of boys at play by the water. One boy is depicted climbing up a gnarly, textured tree trunk, reaching out to grasp a rope tied to a high limb, while the other is seated below, holding a length of rope or a fishing rod, perhaps having fallen from the rope swing or in a moment of rest. The base incorporates aquatic details such as lily pads and fish, suggesting it was originally designed as a fountain element for a pond or garden. The patinated bronze material exhibits a desirable verdigris finish in the recesses, enhancing the detail of the boys’ clothing and the tree bark. The sculpture is in overall good condition consistent with outdoor display, showing a natural patina and some dirt buildup in the crevices. There is visible damage/loss to the top of the seated boy’s fishing pole or staff, and the lower boy is detached from the main tree base in one of the photographs, although it appears to be a removable component for varying display options or was separated during transport. The patina has minor variations across the surface. H 59″, W 20″, D 39′ (Main upright component). H 36″ (Lower boy component, as separated).
