Description

A very handsome and stylish vertical Pawn Broker trade sign from the Art Deco era, circa 1930s-40s. The sign is beautifully crafted using the reverse-painted glass (verre églomisé) technique, with elegant gold leaf lettering advertising “DIAMONDS, WATCHES, JEWELRY, SILVER, ANTIQUES.” Featured at the top of the sign, is the pawnbrokers’ symbol of three spheres suspended from a bar. Historically attributed to the Medici family of Florence, Italy, owing to its symbolic reference to the Italian province of Lombardy, where pawn shop banking originated under the name of Lombard banking. The sign is framed in a dark-stained oak frame. Despite its beauty, the sign has significant damage; the glass panel is heavily cracked, with a major break running through the upper portion of the sign. Dimensions: 75″ tall by 19″ wide x 2.5″ thick.
