October Fall Classic
Lot 1356:
Description
This is a wonderful collection of Americana, combining the tools of Western ranching with early transportation equipment. The three heavy, cast iron pieces are classic examples of 19th-century horse tether weights (or buggy weights), used to anchor a horse’s reins when no hitching post was available, keeping the animal from wandering. Their substantial weights (ranging from nearly 19 to over 33 pounds) are consistent with this function, unlike lighter general store weights. The tall cylindrical weight with the ring handle is marked “T 10”, likely indicating a 10-unit measurement. The flat, puck-shaped weight, with text on top reading: “G.H RICHARDSON ATHOL DEPOT, MASS ___ H.G. DEWITT PAT. JUNE 29, 1852. Accompanying these weights is a fantastic, hand-forged branding iron featuring a distinct, primitive ranch brand (often called a “Lazy T-Bar” or similar). The iron is a beautiful example of blacksmith artistry, complete with a twisted shaft and a split-fork brand head. The entire grouping presents a cohesive narrative of frontier and agricultural life. All pieces are antique cast or wrought iron and exhibit a deep, crusty, rust-colored patina with heavy oxidation, pitting, and wear consistent with outdoor use and age. Branding iron 16.5″long. Tallest weight is 33.1lbs and is 5″ tall and 6″ diameter. Bell shaped weight is 19.4lbs and 4″ tall by 7″ diameter. Puck shaped weight is 18.96 lbs and 2.25″ tall and 6.5″ diameter. See photos.
